Get to know your PULSE volunteers! First edition…Joel Hobgood

23 02 2010

This blog post comes by popular demand. The PULSE students asked for it, and this is what they get! Meet Joel Hobgood. Joel loves wearing fisherman hats, skinny jeans, and the always trendy pair of Chucks.  He also loves playing the keyboard and writing worship music. What many people don’t know about Joel is that he used to live in Alaska…Alaska!!! I guess his fisherman hat came in handy for long days on the Bering Sea harvesting Alaskan King Crabs…I think I even saw him on the Deadliest Catch one time…maybe? No. I’m not sure…Anyways, Joel is a great guy with a great heart and if you attend PULSE and have not met him, make sure you get to know him!

By the way, what an awesome photo!

Love is NOT…

23 02 2010

This past week, I spoke to our high school students at Mt. Zion–or PULSE, need to get used to saying that!–on Love.  In order to find out what LOVE truly is, we decided to tackle it from behind for the first week by discussing what it is NOT.

I can speak from experience in both high school and college that finding out what LOVE is by what it is NOT can be tough…We live in a world that tells us that LOVE is this nebulous emotion that “finds us” and hits us so hard that we cannot control our feelings and what we say and do.  Now you may be asking, “Nate, are you saying Love is supposed to have NO feeling or emotion whatsoever?” No! I am NOT saying this! What I am saying is part of LOVE is an attraction and “feeling”, but when our romantic relationship is based solely on that, we can be sure that the foundation is unstable.

The problem is that we take this presentation of LOVE that the world gives us and put it into action by “dating”. We play the game and do everything we’re supposed to do. Guys, say the right things to get what they want from girls who crave attention to fill an emptiness inside that has not been filled. This “fulfilling” view of love ironically will only lead us to more and more emptiness inside.

Please hear me out, this is not an anti-dating blog entry! But we cannot expect to love (and therefore date) another person until we fill the “God Shaped Hole” in our hearts with His love! We cannot expect to know what love is until we experience God’s love. So as we all seek after LOVE, let us first look to the author of it–our Father in heaven.

Frazee Dream Center Workday Pictures

22 02 2010

This past Saturday a group from PULSE, our high school ministry, went to the Frazee Dream Center to help them out with various projects around their facility. It was such a great time for our students to experience what being the “Hands and Feet” of Christ truly looks like. I love this group and am so very excited about the potential in each and every student to realize the unique plan God has for them! Check out these sweet pictures!

Vision: When times get tough…trust

22 02 2010

Whether we realize it or not, we all have a vision and purpose for our life in the form of goals, dreams, and expectations. But many times, in hindsight, we don’t see these dreams coming to fruition like we thought.

The other morning, I was reading in I Corinthians where Paul encourages us to not to complain as the Israelites once complained in the desert in their pursuit of the Promised Land. If we look into the Israelites’ “journey” in Numbers 14, most of them have taken to complaining against their leader Moses and God for not taking them into the Promised Land as quickly as expected. God then tells the children of Israel in verse 29, “The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, all of you who were numbered according to your entire number, from twenty years old and above.”

Just like the children of Israel had a vision and purpose of reaching the Promised Land, we all have a “Promised Land” that we are working and journeying towards. But if we find ourselves down in the dumps and complaining about our circumstances and where we are at, we will never reach the full potential of what God has for us. Our vision will “fall in this wilderness” if we do not allow the Dream Giver, God, to take us through the journey and trust that he rules sovereignly.

So as you journey toward your goal in life, remember that God has a plan for your life and your vision. Trust the Dream Giver and he will bless you beyond what you could ever ask or imagine.
